The Layered House

Developed in collaboration with K+P Architektur AG, this private residence in Switzerland is conceived through a continuous dialogue between architecture, interior space and landscape.

MFR joined the project during its architectural development, contributing an interior architectural perspective that extended beyond the definition of finishes and furnishings. The work began with a careful reading of the house from within — studying the sequence of arrival, circulation, framed views, natural light and the relationship between the interior and the surrounding landscape.

This process led to a series of spatial interventions that influenced the organisation and architectural expression of the house. These included the redefinition of the entrance sequence, the staircase as a central and visually permeable element, the integration of the tree courtyard, the development of continuous architectural walls with concealed doors and storage, and the refinement of the social and private areas.

The collaboration also extended to the relationship between interior organisation and façade composition, the development of terraces and outdoor living areas, integrated fireplaces and bespoke elements, material direction, and a layered lighting strategy conceived as part of the architecture.

Rather than approaching interior architecture as a separate phase, the project develops architecture, interiors, materiality and the experience of inhabiting the house as one coherent spatial process.
